Hye-Young Jo 조혜영

an HCI researcher, a Kendo enthusiast, a formal film CG specialist, and an artist.

I am a second-year Ph.D. student in Computer Science at the University of Colorado Boulder, advised by Prof. Ryo Suzuki in the Programmable Reality Lab.

My research explores how generative AI and extended reality can enable embodied learning and creative living. I design interactive systems that support dynamic communication with content and transform everyday living into creative activity through media that adapt, evolve, and respond to users’ actions, context, and intentions. I have published papers at prestigious HCI conferences, including ACM CHI, UIST, and HCIK, and received Best Paper (HCIK'22) and Honorable Mention awards (CHI'21). My work has been recognized and supported by Google Ph.D. Fellowship.

Prior, I received my Master's at Make Lab, KAIST, where I had the pleasure of working closely with Prof. Andrea Bianchi. After that, I worked as a research assistant at Artifab lab, Chung-Ang University, with Prof. Yoonji Kim to enrich my academic journey.

Before joining the research community, I studied fine art for 20 years and received a BFA in Painting and Media Arts from Seoul National University.

After graduation, I worked at Dexter Studios, a Korean film company, for four years. I started as a VFX compositor in film post-production, composing raw footage with CG images. Later, I transitioned to the immersive content production team, where I worked as a CG artist, creating 3D characters and virtual environments.

Here are showreels showcasing some of my previous works across various fields outside of research.
